The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed claims made by Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, suggesting that the agency is being manipulated by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, along with other political figures, to target him for not aligning with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
This response from the anti-graft agency comes after the arraignment on December 31, 2025, of Bauchi State Finance Commissioner, Yakubu Adamu, and three others, who are facing charges related to terrorism financing and money laundering involving $9.7 million in state funds that were allegedly sanctioned by the governor.
In a statement released on Friday, the EFCC labeled Mohammed’s accusations as “wild” and “far-fetched,” asserting that it functions independently and free from political pressure.
“The Commission is non-partisan and fulfills its responsibilities without bias or malice,” the statement emphasized, cautioning that depicting the EFCC as a pawn of political agendas is “mischievous and unacceptable.”
The anti-graft agency rejected any insinuations that Wike or any political figure could sway its investigations, calling such assertions “derogatory” and misleading.
Furthermore, the EFCC highlighted that Mohammed had previously faced money laundering allegations before assuming the governorship, pointing out that only constitutional immunity has prevented that case from proceeding.
“Who prompted the Commission to investigate and charge him back in 2016?” it questioned. The EFCC stated that evidence against certain officials from Bauchi State is already in court, allowing Nigerians to determine if the case is motivated by vendetta or by “thorough investigation.”
It also noted that Mohammed’s name is included in the charges because he was the one who approved the transactions in question.
The agency cautioned against downplaying allegations of terrorism financing, emphasizing its obligation to enforce existing laws wherever violations are detected.
