HRH Jesophat Ikegwu, the traditional ruler of the Ishinkwor community in Ebonyi State’s Onicha Local Government Area, has been slain by unknown gunmen.
The event happened on Wednesday night at the monarch’s residence.
According to community sources, the gunmen broke into Ikegwu’s palace and shot him via a window.
Ikechukwu Ogbofia, the chairman of the local government, acknowledged the killing and condemned it.
He stated that the police are investigating the killing and advised members of the neighbourhood to remain calm.
When reached, SP Joshua Ukandu, the Police Public Relations Officer for Ebonyi Command, confirmed the incidence.
With Ikegwu’s death, the state now has five kings killed.
Last month, the traditional ruler of the Ndufu-Alike community in Ikwo Local Government Area was slain after being kidnapped. His body was set on fire by his killers.
Approximately nine people were arrested in connection with the crime, but nothing has been heard about them.
