The Academic Staff Union of Abdullahi Fodio University of Science and Technology, Aliero (ASUU-AFUSTA) has presented a new set of demands to the Kebbi State Government, threatening a walkout if prompt action is not made to resolve their long-standing issues.
Dr. Musa Isah Fakai, the union’s leader, announced the position in a statement. He voiced the union’s growing dissatisfaction with what he regarded as the institution’s chronic disregard for employee wellbeing and unresolved labour issues.
Fakai stated that the demands were part of the union’s ongoing efforts to draw attention to what he called “labour-unfriendly” conditions at the university, noting that similar concerns had been raised numerous times through press briefings, official statements, and other engagements without a meaningful response from relevant authorities.
According to him, despite ongoing campaigning, major players such as the Ministry of Higher Education, university management, and the Governing Council have failed to appropriately address the difficulties that academic personnel face.
“The problems remain numerous, and the situation remains critically unaddressed by the relevant stakeholders,” he said, adding that the union had hoped for stronger responsiveness from the state.
The union’s demands include non-implementation of the authorised salary package for university lecturers, non-payment of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) dating back to 2014, and a backlog of unpaid promotion arrears. The union also criticised the failure to execute annual salary increases for its members.
Fakai cautioned that the government’s failure to meet these requests could result in industrial action, and emphasised that the union will not hesitate to take the necessary means to preserve its members’ welfare.
