Over the course of the state, 235 automobiles have been confiscated by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) due to indiscriminate parking, severe environmental infractions, and overall traffic chaos.
Adebayo Tofiq, a spokesman for the agency, made this announcement on Thursday. According to Tofiq, the state’s clean-up enforcement program targeted key traffic routes, seizing the automobiles in the process.
“Today marked the beginning of this extensive operation, which has been carefully planned by Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of LASTMA. Full deployment has been made across high-density zones, including Oyingbo, Iddo, Eja-Lonibu, Adeniji Adele, Sabo, Jibowu (Inter-State Terminal), and Oshodi,” he announced.
The Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018 was violated by a total of 235 vehicles, including 38 private cars, 156 painted Volkswagen commercial buses (Danfo), 19 minibuses (Korope)/tricycles, five haulage trucks, and 17 interstate passenger buses, according to LASTMA.
Illegally encroaching upon pedestrian paths, blocking vehicular flow, establishing unauthorised terminals, and recklessly disregarding established traffic restrictions were among the violations.
A grave environmental defilement and a threat to public safety and the structural integrity of the Adeniji Adele Bridge were caused by five articulated trucks that were caught illegally offloading livestock, including rams, cows, and abattoir waste, in one particularly egregious episode.
The drivers will soon face legal action for their flagrant disregard for sanitation standards, according to the statement.
According to LASTMA head Bakare-Oki, the urban regeneration strategy of the Lagos State Government includes the clean-up enforcement drive.
