Protests across the country are scheduled for June 12, according to the #Endbadgovernance Movement.
At a news conference in Lagos on Thursday, one of the movement’s leaders, Comrade Hassan Soweto, made the statement. The current administration’s economic changes, he claims, are to blame for the hardships that have been caused by the protest.
The unification of the naira and the elimination of subsidies, according to Soweto, have had a negative impact on the economy and put many people in a difficult position.
“The devaluation of the naira and the elimination of oil subsidies have had a stifling effect on the national economy during Tinubu’s two years in office.
The previous two years under President Tinubu’s administration have been a catastrophe for the majority of Nigerians, that much is certain. He said that the regime’s anti-poor and neoliberal policies had caused the economy and livelihoods to collapse on an unprecedented scale.
Concerned about what he saw as the dictatorship-like rule under Tinubu, Soweto voiced his concerns about the abuse of democracy.
We can’t help but notice that the Nigerian people are acting more and more like slaves. The Tinubu government has utterly dismantled the constitutionally protected liberties that previously sparked resistance to military rule and the fight for democracy. He lamented that Nigerians are unable to go around freely due to the reduction in public space.
Along with the demonstrators, he urged IGP Kayode Egbetokun and Olohundare Moshood Jimoh, the commissioner of police for Lagos State, to work together.
