Roman Abramovich, the former owner of Chelsea FC, is facing threats from the UK government to sue him over the £2.5 billion he received when he sold the club.
According to Abramovich, he intended to provide the funds to those who had lost everything in Russia’s conflict in Ukraine.
Britain punished Abramovich as part of its crackdown on Russian oligarchs after Moscow invaded Ukraine in 2022. The Premier League team was sold off quickly and the earnings were frozen as a result of this.
At this point, the United Kingdom is insisting that the money go only to Ukraine. As a whole, this fits with Europe’s demands that Russia pay for the damage and casualties caused by its invasion. More leeway and distribution of funds to all victims are priorities for Abramovich.
“The government is determined to see the proceeds from the sale of Chelsea Football Club reach humanitarian causes in Ukraine, following Russia’s illegal full-scale invasion,” stated a joint statement by British finance minister Rachel Reeves and foreign minister David Lammy on Tuesday.
Since we and Mr. Abramovich have been unable to come to a resolution on this matter thus far, we are extremely irritated.
While they did say they were “fully prepared to pursue this through the courts if required,” they also said that discussions were still an option.
