A public hearing has been scheduled by the Lagos State House of Assembly to examine growing issues within the ride-hailing sector. Notable operators invited to the hearing include Bolt, LagRide, Indrive, Rida, and Uber.
Mr. Azeez Jaiyesimi, chairman of the Lagos Chapter of the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria, AUATON, revealed this information on Monday in a statement released by Mr. Steven Iwindoye, the union’s Public Relations Officer, in Lagos.
The union formally petitioned the Assembly, according to Jaiyesimi, prompting the convening of the hearing on Tuesday.
Uber, Bolt, Indrive, Rida, and LagRide have all been asked to appear before a public hearing set for Tuesday, June 17, by the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Jaiyesimi stated that the purpose of the hearing was to “create a framework for safer, fairer, and more accountable operations in the Nigerian gig economy” in response to the increasing discontent in the ride-hailing industry.
Insecurity, abuses of labour rights, and claimed regulatory non-compliance by enterprises operating in the state were among the problems mentioned by AUATON in their appeal.
The document, which is titled “Public Petition Against Uber, Bolt, Indrive, Rida, and LagRide for Non-Compliance with the National Collective Agreement and Corporate Negligence, Resulting in the
Victimisation of App-Based Transport Workers in Nigeria,” accuses the platforms of systemic neglect and exploitative practices that put drivers’ safety and livelihoods at risk.
Driver profiling, passenger safety, unfair pricing, lack of welfare benefits, inconsistent commission structures, and the repression of union rights are some of the main issues highlighted in the petition.
