Bashar Aliyu Gummi has been chosen Speaker of the Zamfara State House of Assembly by the auxiliary faction. In spite of what they saw as intimidation from the state government headed by Governor Dauda Lawal, the faction has declared that they will carry out their duties as lawmakers.
The parliamentarians vowed that their focused leadership would remain unshaken regardless of the state government’s use of “politically twisted courts” or other forms of intimidation. Aliyu Ango Kagara, speaking on behalf of the Talata Mafara South Constituency, delivered a statement on behalf of the faction.
“We have taken note of the state government’s hostile actions towards us and have taken legal action by submitting petitions against the Dauda Lawal administration to state and federal security agencies. Additionally, we have reached out to stakeholders who have the best interests of the state and its citizens regarding this matter.
What’s more, there has been a blatant violation of law by the opposing faction in the state House of Assembly, led by Hon. Bilyaminu Moriki, who has suspended several of us for more than a year without following the Constitution or the law.
In case anything were to happen to any of us, individually or collectively, we have also informed the security about recorded plans by some thugs associated with the governor to assault us and our families.
The state government has rushed to a lower court to seek our arrest without charges, which was wrongly granted by Justice Halima Jaafar Mikaila, who decided to treat us like criminals, even though it had previously mandated that certain former leaders of the State House of Assembly meet with us to discuss resolving the crisis and our pending case at the Appeal Court, Sokoto.
The court order was processed in such a disorganized fashion that one of the dates reads 2024. Justice Halima Jaafar Mikaila, who takes great pride in her role as a legal officer, neglected to specify who was to be arrested unless, of course, she meant the governor’s attack squad, which is mentioned earlier.
Nothing has changed regarding our firm belief that the state’s various branches of government must adhere to the rule of law. No matter how many dangers we face, we will not let them stop us from carrying out our mission.
