In a formal letter to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Prof. Awa U. Kalu has denied the charges of forgery and impersonation levelled against lawyer Victor Giwa of Abuja.
But the police have nonetheless charged Giwa, even though he sent a letter.
The police accused Giwa of using someone else’s letterhead to pass off Kalu’s legal practice as her own.
In contrast, Kalu assured Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector General of Police, in a letter that he had never reported the forging of his documents to the authorities and that his letterhead had always been authentic.
Kalu told the Inspector General of Police in a letter he sent on May 30, 2025, that he had neither reported or filed a complaint against Giwa for allegedly forging his company’s letterhead.
Giwa is facing allegations in the case No. CR/150/25, whereby he is alleged to have communicated with the Attorney General of the Federation using the official letterhead of Awa U. Kalu (SAN) & Partners (formerly Awa U. Kalu (SAN) & Associates).
In her letter to the IGP, Kalu wrote: “I am writing to let you know that there is a lot of buzz online regarding a case that has been filed against the individual in question, suggesting that he falsified my official letterhead.
“I want you to know that I haven’t done anything to report or lodge a complaint with any Nigerian police station about Mr. Victor Giwa forging my official documents.
The forgery charge, according to Kalu, rests on the unauthorised use of his firm’s name and letterhead, but his remarks imply that the main person whose identity was allegedly exploited never formally accused, thereby weakening the basis of the claim.
In a letter dated May 24, 2025, Giwa requested that the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, investigate claims of cash enticement in order to bring charges against him.
Regarding the accusation of a baseless charge brought against him and another individual, Giwa specifically requested that Egbetokun look into the cases involving the Nigerian Police Commissioner, the Legal Services of the Police, Chiozoba Oyakhire Ehiede, and Ms. Asabe Waziri.
In addition, he demanded that the IGP investigate the relationship between Asabe Waziri, an employee of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), and the CP, the Legal Services of the Nigeria Police.
The letter in issue was issued within the confines of a valid legal partnership, and Giwa has consistently asserted that no deceit or forgery was involved, thereby preserving his innocence.
