One of the greatest dangers facing Africa, according to former president Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria, is electoral fraud.
During the 2025 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation (GJF) democracy dialogue in Accra, Ghana, Jonathan made this statement. Democracy, in his view, can give rise to tyranny and despair when it falls short of people’s aspirations.
He went on to say that leaders should support democracy because it helps kids have a say in their destiny and gives them a better chance of success.
Without a concerted effort from all parties involved, democracy on the African continent is in danger of collapsing. The rigging of elections is still a major concern in Africa.
In order for our democracy to serve our people and ourselves, we Africans need to take a hard look at it. Our electoral system is one of the issues. According to him, some people want to stay in power by manipulating the process.
