The Kwara State Police Command has initiated a manhunt for suspects in a violent attack that killed two individuals and destroyed approximately ten buildings in Ilesha Baruba, Baruten Local Government Area of the state.
On May 31, 2026, the command’s spokeswoman, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, released a statement detailing the situation.
According to the statement, the event began with a dispute between an unidentified Fulani man and an Islamic scholar, Mohammed Ilyasu, during which both men were injured by machetes.
According to the authorities, Ilyasu was declared dead upon arriving at the hospital, while the other man died while undergoing treatment.
The command claimed that some youngsters attacked the hospital, took the deceased suspect’s body, and set it on fire.
Another man passing through the neighbourhood was allegedly attacked and torched by the mob.
Police also said that approximately ten buildings belonging to members of the Fulani community, including the Ardo Fulani’s house, Alhaji Hassan, were destroyed during the incident.
According to the statement, security professionals, including police and military officers, were sent to the area and have restored normalcy.
Ojo Adekimi, the Commissioner of Police, denounced the violence and warned against taking the law into their own hands.
“No individual or group has the right to take the law into their own hands irrespective of the circumstances surrounding any incident,” the commissioner stated.
The command said investigations were ongoing and assured people that those responsible for the attacks would be apprehended and prosecuted.
