Opposite the Asaba International Airport, a two-story building that was under construction has fallen.
The hotel at Okpanam, which was across from the Asaba Airport Police Station, fell after a long period of rain. People in the region are really freaking out because of what happened.
According to eyewitnesses, rescue efforts for the remaining stranded workers resumed on Thursday, while some of them were already rescued.
Despite the lack of confirmed fatalities, rumours have it that a few employees leaped from the building onto nearby compounds just moments before the incident.
Apparently, the building’s collapse occurred as the workmen were preparing to go to the parapet after completing the second floor.
According to a security guard who spoke with the media, some employees were hurt while attempting to flee for their life.
The security guard who narrowly avoided injury in the moments leading up to the building’s collapse admitted that construction had been underway. He claimed that the owner was rushing the construction of the building because of the relentless rain.
An anonymous worker named David said that while some employees were able to jump from the second story of the building to escape the enclosed area, others were maimed or died trying. According to David, individuals who had injuries were taken to the hospital immediately for treatment.
Several individuals in control of the building have gone into hiding out of fear of being arrested by the authorities, and as we speak, everyone has left the location. When the building collapsed, some people from the estate actually came to help rescue the residents.”
Engineer Michael Anoka, the state commissioner for urban renewal, did not answer his phone or return messages left for him when this story was filed.
