Fresh fractures have appeared inside the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Adamawa State, as a prominent group allied with Senator Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed Binani announced a mass departure from the party, citing a “total collapse of internal democracy.”
The decision, announced in a communiqué following a stakeholders’ conference held at Hon. Mijiyewa Umaru Kugama’s residence, represents a significant political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The group, which represented the state’s three senatorial zones, accused the party leadership at the state and national levels of eroding democratic ideals and imposing illegitimate structures.
“The actions of the party leadership have destroyed internal democracy, undermined the rule of law, and rendered the party structure in Adamawa State illegitimate and unacceptable,” the communiqué said.
At the heart of the conflict are the recently conducted party congresses, which stakeholders believe were plagued by manipulation and imposition under Ishaya Bauka’s (retd) leadership.
According to the group, court judgements and previous injunctions were disregarded, resulting in a “dangerous precedent of lawlessness.”
“The congresses were fundamentally flawed, manipulated, and imposed against the will of the majority of party members,” the parties involved claimed.
They further accused party officials of marginalising crucial actors through “systematic exclusion, intimidation, and imposition,” claiming that the ADC has thus lost legitimacy as a democratic platform in the state.
In a series of broad resolutions, the faction issued a vote of no confidence in the ADC leadership and announced their “immediate and irreversible resignation en masse” from the party.
The organization also declared the results of the contested congresses “null and void.”
“We refuse to be part of a system that thrives on injustice, impunity, and illegality,” the statement stated.
The stakeholders affirmed plans to align with a new political platform, but no party was officially announced.
They did, however, appoint Senator Binani to lead the transition and coordinate a united strategy for the next election campaign.
According to political commentators, the incident has the potential to drastically restructure Adamawa’s political environment, especially since Binani is projected to remain a key role in the 2027 governorship campaign.
The communiqué stated intentions for a coordinated defection structure spanning polling units, wards, and local government districts, as well as vigorous grassroots recruitment through a new platform.
“This decision marks the beginning of a new political direction anchored on credibility, inclusiveness, and true democratic ideals,” the stakeholders said.
The problem exacerbates mounting tensions between opposition parties across the country, with analysts warning that unresolved internal conflicts might undermine party cohesion ahead of future elections.
