Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain Atiku Abubakar has condemned the National Broadcasting Commission’s (NBC) recent Code of Conduct advice, describing it as an attempt to curtail press freedom and free expression in Nigeria.
On Saturday, Atiku published a statement via his official X Twitter.
The statement read: “The National Broadcasting Commission’s Code of Conduct guideline is yet another worrying attempt to silence the media and limit free expression in Nigeria.
“Our media sector has evolved into a robust institution, recognised worldwide for its durability and professionalism. It is so concerning that, as elections approach, the NBC resorts to heavy-handed directives that serve more to muzzle opposition than to preserve ethical journalism.
“I strongly support Nigeria’s broadcast sector and other media platforms fighting this creeping tyranny.
“Let us be clear: ethical norms are not seasonal instruments to be wielded during campaigns; they are ongoing commitments.
“The timing and tone of these laws reveal a larger agenda. It indicates a leadership that is more concerned in controlling narratives than with ensuring a free, fair, and transparent democratic process.”
The NBC issued a notification noting that broadcasters are obligated to maintain impartiality and ethical standards at all times.
It warned that any anchor or presenter found to be expressing personal ideas as facts, bullying or intimidating guests, denying opposing viewpoints a fair hearing, compromising neutrality, or disrespecting human dignity would be judged to be in violation of broadcast laws.
