At least seven people have been killed following a violent clash between farmers and herders in Lanzai and Dosho communities of Darazo Local Government Area in Bauchi State.
According to the Bauchi State Police Command, the incident began after suspected herders allegedly attacked farmers working on farmland on the outskirt of Lanzai community.
Police spokesperson SP Nafiu Habib disclosed in a statement on Thursday that the command received reports of the attack, which triggered a retaliatory response from youths in the area.
The enraged youngsters reportedly invaded Dosho, a village primarily populated by Fulani herders, setting fire to areas of the community. Approximately 50 huts were burnt during the conflict, as were other household possessions.
Authorities confirmed that seven people lost their lives, while six others sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment. Several houses and personal belongings were also damaged during the turmoil.
To prevent further escalation, the police have deployed tactical teams and operatives to the affected communities. The Violent Crime Response Unit has also been mobilised to reinforce security, while patrols have been intensified across Lanzai, Dosho, and neighbouring areas.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the crisis.
He reassured people that those responsible for both the initial attack and the following retribution will be discovered and prosecuted.
