The House of Representatives has approved an extension of the capital component of the 2025 budget from June 30th, 2026 to September 30th, 2026.
The approval came after an emergency meeting on Monday.
Julius Ihonvbere, House Leader, led the debate on the bill’s general principles, which seek to extend the lifespan of the 2025 budget’s capital expenditures.
Ihonvbere emphasised that significant funding granted to Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) remained unutilised due to administrative bottlenecks, procurement delays, and implementation issues.
According to him, the extended window is intended to prevent the abandonment of vital infrastructure projects around the country, provide time for ongoing projects to be completed, and satisfy outstanding commitments.
The Acting Clerk of the House of Representatives, Ibrahim Sidi, provided the notification of the emergency sitting in a memo to all members on Sunday.
He stated that the sitting was held in accordance with Order Five, Rule 2, Subsection 2 of the House of Representatives Standing Orders.
