Six Nigerians, a Libyan man, and his mother have all been apprehended by Libyan authorities, who claim they are investigating allegations of human smuggling in Sirte.
Intercepting a vehicle driven by the Libyan suspect, whose identity is only known by his initials A.M.M., the Abu Najim Police Department conducted the operation. The arrest occurred while his mother was allegedly in the car.
An announcement from Migrant Rescue Watch (MRW) states that when police searched the vehicle, they found six Nigerian migrants without proper documentation. The migrants were reportedly being transported as part of an effort to smuggle them.
“The driver and his mother, along with all those who were arrested, have been handed over to the proper authorities for further investigation and prosecution,” the group announced.
Over the years, Libya has served as a vital hub for migrants, particularly those from sub-Saharan Africa, who risk everything to cross the Mediterranean Sea and reach Europe.
