Brigadier General Usman Sani (retd) has voiced his support for sending Nigerian troops to the Benin Republic, emphasizing that this action is crucial for safeguarding Nigeria’s stability and national interests.
During an appearance on the Channels Morning Brief, which was observed by Naijatrial on Wednesday, the former army spokesman pointed out that Nigeria’s security is intricately linked to the situations in neighboring countries, especially since Nigeria is predominantly surrounded by French-speaking nations.
He remarked, “They say necessity is the mother of invention, and that’s something you all should grasp, the complexity of Nigerian society.
“In this context, we are geographically encircled by other countries that are mostly French-speaking, among other factors.”
He highlighted that even a small crisis in any of these nations could directly impact Nigeria, irrespective of their population size or geographical borders.
He explained that potential humanitarian repercussions, such as an influx of displaced individuals from Benin, could burden Nigeria’s economy, border communities, and cross-border trade.
“Even a minor crisis in any of our neighboring countries can have direct consequences for Nigeria, ranging from humanitarian issues to economic and trade disruptions. That’s why stabilizing democratic governance in Benin is not just optional; it is essential.”
He contended that this situation makes it vital for Nigeria to assist in stabilizing democratic governance in Benin, characterizing the intervention as a strategic necessity rather than merely a convenient choice.
Sani called on the public to recognize the wider security implications for the region, stressing that Nigeria cannot overlook unrest in its neighboring states.
