Today, tragedy hit the NPA Waterside in Warri, Delta State, when a canoe carrying Sandfill II people sank after colliding with an engine boat.
Chinaza, a 19-year-old woman, is still missing, as divers and local fisherman scour the NPA river for her remains.
According to eyewitnesses, the event occurred when the canoe collided with another wooden engine boat in midstream, with several passengers on board.
Chinaza, a 19-year-old Ibo woman, apparently sank and could not be found due to her incapacity to swim.
A 7-year-old youngster who was in the boat with his mother and sister managed to swim to safety after the disaster.
Miss Favour, a friend of the missing girl who was also on the ill-fated boat, stated that the engine boat driver reported himself to Marine Police, NPA, and was put into custody for questioning.
“The driver weh jam us report himself to marine police,” she replied.
Rescue operations were still underway as divers and local fisherman combed the NPA river for Chinaza’s body.
Authorities have yet to issue an official comment about the incident.
The catastrophe has prompted increased calls for stronger safety enforcement on Warri waterways, such as the use of life jackets and boat speed regulation.
