The Uyo Liberation Movement, a socio-political organization in Akwa Ibom State, has requested that political parties in the state zone transfer their Uyo State Constituency seat to the Offot Ukwa Clan.
This request is intended to facilitate the emergence of a lawmaker from the clan to represent the people of Uyo in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly in 2027.
On May 17, 2026, in Uyo, ULM issued a 13-point communique that was jointly signed by the group’s President, Barr. Udeme Ekott, and the Secretary General, Elder Emmanuel Sam.
The group condemned the efforts of specific individuals to undermine the current zoning arrangement in Uyo, which has promoted tranquillity in the local government area since the restoration of democracy in 1999.
A portion of the communiqué stated, “The Uyo Liberation Movement (ULM) was established in response to the necessity of a neutral, independent, and robust voice to represent the interests of the Uyo Local Government and its citizens in advance of the 2027 election.”
ULM has observed the intentional endeavour of certain individuals who have no positive intentions for Uyo to disrupt the current zoning formula of the Uyo House of Assembly seat, which has promoted peace and unity among the populace since the return of the current democratic dispensation in 1999.
The group in its communiqué declared that the Offot Clan will be responsible for the election of the lawmaker who will represent Uyo in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly in 2027.
They expressed their regret that the current lawmaker who represents the Uyo State Constituency in the House of Assembly is unable to provide effective representation to his constituents and, as a result, should not be permitted to return in 2027.
“ULM firmly asserts that the Offot Ukwa Clan has the right to elect the next House of Assembly member for the Uyo State Constituency in 2027, as the House of Assembly in Uyo has implemented a one-term formula.”
“ULM is vehemently opposed to the proposal to undervalue Uyo by awarding a non-performing representative a second term, which would not only impede the local government’s progress but also disrupt the political arrangement that has united the people for so many years.”
“ULM further asserts that it would be a complete waste of another four years to extend the tenure of a representative who the authorities do not deem qualified to hold a critical position in the State Assembly, unless they intend to cause Uyo to be embarrassed,” the communique continued.
The Uyo Liberation Movement has encouraged the sons and daughters of the Offot Ukwa Clan to participate in the 2027 election. Additionally, the organization has expressed its willingness to collaborate with any political party that allocates the Uyo State Constituency party ticket to the Offot Ukwa Clan.
“ULM anticipates a lose-lose situation for Uyo if a representative who is not performing well is granted a second term, thereby perpetuating his poor performance and failing to secure at least the position of Deputy Speaker in the upcoming Assembly.”
