In response to three petitions, Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama has suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo and launched an investigation. The President’s Office made this information public in a statement they released on Tuesday.
The statement states that the President, following discussions with the Council of State, has decided that there is sufficient evidence to form a committee to review the petitions. Nevertheless, the statement failed to elaborate on the particular claims made in each petition.
The presidential office of Ghana has not yet issued a statement providing all of the relevant data. According to Naijatrial, Chief Justice Torkornoo has been in her position since June 2023. She is the third female Chief Justice of Ghana, having been chosen by former President Nana Akufo-Addo.
President Akufo-Addo cited multiple flaws in a petition to remove her off the bench earlier Ghana year, but she allegedly withstood the effort.
