According to residents, at least 17 people were killed in an attack on the Mbalom hamlet in Benue’s Gwer East Local Government Area on Easter Sunday.
The recent tragedy adds to the ongoing security issues in sections of Benue, where rural populations have been targeted by suspected armed groups.
Residents claimed that the perpetrators assaulted the hamlet, killing several individuals and setting buildings on fire.
At least 17 bodies have been recovered, with many more still missing as people scour the nearby bushes for further fatalities.
Several homes and properties were destroyed during the raid, displacing survivors.
A neighbourhood citizen, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said, “This is awful. People were taken unawares. Many are still missing.
Several calls to DSP Udeme Edet, spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, to confirm the unfortunate incident were not replied as of the time of this report.
