The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, known as LASTMA, has warned drivers to avoid illegal parking and obstructing roads during the cross-over night festivities throughout the state.
This warning was issued on Sunday by LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, in a statement made public in Lagos.
Bakare-Oki emphasized that access routes near places of worship, markets, nightclubs, event centers, and other significant gathering locations must remain clear, pointing out that any violations will not be tolerated.
He noted that cross-over night typically sees a significant rise in both vehicle and foot traffic, often worsened by poorly organized events like carnivals, roadside celebrations, street parties, and spontaneous gatherings.
“While we acknowledge the cultural, religious, and community significance of these events, LASTMA disapproves of the improper use of public roads, including turning them into makeshift parking areas or informal event spaces,” Bakare-Oki stated.
“Such actions are serious breaches of traffic laws that can have extensive consequences for public safety, emergency services, and urban traffic flow,” he added.
The LASTMA chief urged drivers to refrain from leaving their vehicles on roadways, shoulders, medians, pedestrian paths, and essential access routes leading to churches, mosques, and social venues.
He also cautioned organizers and attendees of carnivals, street parties, and other festive events against obstructing highways, local roads, or access points without the necessary permissions and coordination with the appropriate authorities.
In anticipation of potential traffic issues, Bakare-Oki revealed that the agency has implemented an improved traffic management, monitoring, and enforcement strategy to facilitate smooth vehicle movement and ensure public safety during the celebrations.
He mentioned that trained traffic officers, along with rapid response teams and advanced surveillance, will be on hand to assist.
