Dr. Appolos Kuchi, a security analyst and counter-insurgency authority, has urged the Plateau State government and local security forces to implement proactive strategies to avert an influx of terrorists into the region. This warning comes in light of the recent airstrikes initiated by the United States targeting terrorist strongholds in Sokoto State.
With the US indicating plans for similar operations in other areas plagued by terrorists and bandits, Dr. Kuchi expresses concern that some of the escaping terrorists may migrate to Plateau due to the state’s vulnerable borders if not adequately monitored.
In a phone conversation with Naijatrial on Sunday, the security expert emphasized that terrorists view Plateau as an easy target with accessible entry points, making it a likely destination for them.
“It is well-known that Plateau State shares borders with several other states, including Bauchi, Nasarawa, Taraba, Kaduna, and even the FCT,” Kuchi remarked.
“The US airstrikes have instilled panic among the terrorists, and the most logical place for them to flee would be Plateau State,” he added.
The security analyst further pointed out that over the last twenty years, Plateau State has been a hotspot for violent assaults by bandits and terrorists, who have consistently found it easy to infiltrate the area.
“Historically, their approach has involved entering the state from Bauchi and Nasarawa, but given the current panic, they might explore alternative routes such as Taraba and Kaduna to access Plateau.
“Moreover, we must remember that the state has served as their playground for many years without proper oversight, and they could seize this opportunity to enter in large numbers.
“I am taking this chance to urge the state government and relevant security agencies to effectively monitor the borders to prevent any attempts by terrorists to invade the state and engage in their malicious activities,” Dr. Kuchi advised.
