The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, has disclosed that road construction, excavation, and other civil engineering activities caused over 5,000 fibre-optic cable cuts across Nigeria in the first half of 2026.
The panel determined that these accidents were mostly the result of insufficient cooperation among construction firms, government agencies, and telecommunications providers prior to the start of excavation operations. It warned that continued damage to fibre infrastructure could jeopardise the country’s digital economy.
