Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo, a community leader in Warri South-West local government, has advocated for a peaceful resolution to the Supreme Court’s order to delineate the Warri Federal Constituency.
His call comes after protesting Ijaw women shut down 13 flow stations in Gbaramatu Kingdom on June 8.
Ekpemupolo made the request in a statement to Warri-based journalists.
He stated, “The Ijaw nation has always been known for its peaceful traditions and cannot depart from that tradition.
“The current political scenario resulting from INEC’s refusal to finish the delineation of wards in the Warri Federal Constituency, as well as mass action, must not be hijacked or deteriorate into any kind of violence.
“I’m calling for calm, regardless of the situation. I am also calling for a gathering of community leaders to be held soon so that we can establish a strategy for moving forward.”
According to him, “We must all work together to find a peaceful solution to this impasse.”
“INEC must resolve to do the right thing and restore peace in Warri and its surrounds.
“We call on the people of Warri (whether Ijaw, Itsekiri or Urhobo) to be calm and wait patiently for INEC to do the right thing.”
On Monday, indigenous Ijaw women protested and shut down flow stations operated by an oil corporation in the Gbaramatu enclave.
They have pledged to remain at the facility until the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, executes the Supreme Court’s decision on the delineation of Wards and Polling Units in the Warri Federal Constituency.
