Borno State Governor Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum has backed Mustapha Gubio, his immediate former Commissioner for Works, as his chosen candidate for the 2027 governorship election under the All Progressives Congress (APC), paving the way for a potentially tough party primary.
Malam Dauda Iliya, the governor’s spokeswoman, confirmed the news on Tuesday, praising Gubio as the candidate best suited to sustain and enhance the administration’s development plan.
According to him, Gubio represents continuity and has a thorough awareness of the government’s policy orientation and accomplishments.
Gubio denotes continuity. “He understands the vision of this administration and has the ability to build on its accomplishments,” Iliya stated.
The endorsement came after a symbolic occasion caught in a photograph of Gubio presenting his declaration of interest and nomination forms to the governor, along with key political players such as Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno and supporters.
The development has already sparked political reactions in APC circles in Borno State, with observers warning that it may increase internal competitiveness ahead of the primary.
Observers also believe the endorsement will strengthen emerging political alliances inside the party as candidates continue talks ahead of the 2027 elections.
