Police arrest officer for public execution of Nigerian in Delta

The Nigeria Police Force has detained an officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, in connection with the fatal shooting of a suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta state.

The incident occurred on Sunday, when police officers from the Effurun Area Command responded to reports from the Benin Motor Park on the Warri-Sapele Motorway.

The guy was reportedly captured by transport union members while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta weapon and four rounds of ammo.

Police said that while attempting to apprehend the suspect, the team leader, ASP Usman, discharged his handgun in breach of regulations, resulting in the suspect’s death.

“The Nigeria Police Force’s leadership has directed that the officer and his crew be immediately transferred to Force Headquarters in Abuja, where they will face the Force Disciplinary Committee for summary disciplinary action and prosecution.

“The Inspector-General of Police expresses his sympathies to the family of the deceased and assures them that justice will be administered in accordance with the law. He also begs the people to stay calm and law-abiding as the disciplinary and legal proceedings unfold,” the statement read.
