Every candidate for office in the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) was obliged to sign a document promising to resign from their position if they were elected and later decided to leave the party. This anti-defection policy was later defended by the party.
Osa Director, the party’s national publicity secretary, stated in an interview airing Thursday on “Prime Time” on Arise Television that the policy is written into the NDC constitution.
Any NDC candidate running for governor, the National Assembly, or any other political office shall be subject to the policy.
The anti-defection policy is laid out in Article 16 of the NDC’s constitution.
It is mandatory for all elected party members to sign an affidavit stating their intention to remain party members under our constitution, which is available in article 16.
“Statesmen are concerned with country building, whereas politicians are concerned with winning elections.
NDC is a political party that supports Nigeria’s overall progress and development. According to him, this is why they will push for other political groups to follow suit, so that democracy and the law can spread even farther.
