The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken into custody Abubakar Malami, a former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, after he did not fulfill the bail conditions that were set for him.
As reported by the News Agency of Nigeria, a source within the commission confirmed this news, indicating that Malami would remain detained until 10 pm on Tuesday due to his failure to meet the bail requirements.
The anti-graft agency has requested that the former minister provide explanations regarding matters related to money laundering, especially concerning the management of questionable accounts.
“We have detained him in connection with terrorism financing and the location of the Abacha loot that was recovered from Switzerland and the Island of Jersey in the UK. He will stay in custody until he meets the necessary requirements.
“We arrested him for not adhering to his bail conditions, and he will continue to be in our custody until those conditions are satisfied. He is currently in our custody. Although he was initially granted bail, he did not comply with the conditions. There are numerous charges against him,” the EFCC source stated.
The anti-graft agency has mandated the former minister to report daily for questioning throughout December.
“At this time, we are looking into 18 different charges against him. These include money laundering, abuse of office, and terrorism financing.
“We cannot currently estimate the total amount involved, as we are continuously uncovering more details about the transactions as our investigation progresses,” the source revealed.
