Eleven death row convicts in Niger have been granted an unconditional pardon by Governor Mohammed Bago.
On Tuesday, Nasiru Mu’azu, the state’s attorney general and commissioner of justice, announced the pardon.
He went on to say that the prisoners were killed and injured in a communal fight that broke out between the Gaba and Anfani villages in the state’s Lavun Local Government District.
Mohammed Mohammed, Baba Shaba, Isah Nmadu, Mohammed Mohammed Ndabida, Abubakar Salihu, and Nana Sheshi were among those who benefited from the pardon.
Isah Mohammed Alhaji Inuwa, Ibrahim Mohammed, Mohammed Isah, Haruna Mohammed, Adamu Babaminin, and the rest are not mentioned.
He claims that the governor and the State Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy gave careful consideration to the pardon.
“Since numerous meetings have been conducted and all matters have been resolved, the state pardon is also a component of the efforts to reconcile and bring about lasting peace between the two communities,” the statement continued.
The Commissioner further suggested that anybody dealing with a comparable matter submit a formal request. The pardon instrument was gazetted after being signed on May 28, according to the attorney general.
