Chibuzo Okereke, the Labour Party presidential candidate, has stated that his choice of Hajja Bintu Konto as his running partner in the 2027 election was solely inspired by her competence and national interest.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday, Okereke described Konto’s nomination, which was confirmed by the party’s leadership, as “another defining moment” in the party’s efforts to construct a “Nigerians First” government.
He remarked, “Today marks another watershed moment in our shared path to build a Nigeria that serves its people. With thankfulness to God and a sense of responsibility, I congratulate Hajja Bintu Konto as my Vice Presidential Candidate.”
The LP Presidential candidate emphasised that the choice was motivated by a single consideration: “the best interests of Nigeria and Nigerians.” He added that this is consistent with the Labour Party’s commitment to competence, ethics, inclusion, and transformational leadership.
He portrayed Konto as a nurse, public health specialist, humanitarian, and development expert whose career has focused on improving lives and strengthening communities.
He claimed that the exclusion of women reduces national capacity. “Nations that utilise the potential of both men and women build stronger institutions and promote inclusive democracies. Women are critical allies in building the Nigeria we hope to realise. Neglecting them is like attempting to clap with one hand.
Okereke further stated that Konto has demonstrated bravery, resilience, compassion, and professional brilliance in her work. “She embodies the principles of integrity, service, inclusion, and transformational leadership that we seek in our government.”
The LP candidate thanked Labour Party leaders, including Dr. Alex Otti, National Chairman Senator Nenadi Usman, and National Secretary Rt. Hon. Iheanacho Obioma, for their support of the ticket.
He also asked party members and Nigerians to support the endeavour to build a just, secure, and wealthy nation.
