The Ogun State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Corps Commander Akinwunmi Fasakin, has encouraged Nigerians to let go of the long-standing myth surrounding the last four months of the year. He emphasized that there is nothing unusual or mysterious about this time of the year.
According to Naijatrial, the months of September, October, November, and December, commonly known as the ’ember months,’ are often thought to be a period of heightened risk for accidents, crime, and other unfortunate events.
As a result of these beliefs, many individuals turn to spiritual leaders for protection against potential dangers during these months.
While speaking to members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) at their monthly meeting in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, on Tuesday, the Sector Commander urged people to abandon such beliefs.
Commander Fasakin, addressing the theme: ‘Safety on Our Roads and the Ember Months Mystery,’ clarified that the rise in road accidents during the ember months is primarily due to human, vehicular, and environmental factors, rather than superstition.
He pointed out that the goal is to minimize road crashes as much as possible, urging drivers and road users to follow safety protocols, including avoiding overloading, speeding, drinking and driving, and ensuring their vehicles are in good working order before hitting the road.
‘One of the main reasons for the increase in accidents during the ember months is the rise in vehicle and economic activity on the roads during this time. Our aim is to reduce crashes to the lowest possible level,’ Fasakin stated.
He argued that road safety is a collective responsibility, not just the government’s, and assured that the FRSC will continue its efforts to inform the public about road safety practices by partnering with media organizations.
