Obasanjo and Peter Obi meet

Amid increasing political speculation about the former Nigerian leader’s participation in the run-up to the 2027 general election, Peter Obi, a presidential contender for the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), met with Olusegun Obasanjo on Wednesday.

Esther Umoh, who was Obi’s photographer, posted photos from the gathering on X.

“Earlier today, the presidential candidate of the NDC, Peter Obi met with former president Olusegun Obasanjo,” Umoh said in a brief statement that accompanied the photographs.

Obi and Obasanjo met on Wednesday, just days after Akin Osuntokun, the ex-president’s long-time political adviser, charged that Obasanjo was the driving force behind Rabiu Kwankwaso and Obi’s coalition in preparation for the 2027 presidential race.

During an interview with Arise Television, Osuntokun denied rumours that Obasanjo was secretly backing President Bola Tinubu, saying that the former president had been instrumental in uniting the opposition.

Citing internal strife and legal matters, Obi and his running mate Rabi’u Kwamkwanso reportedly defected to the NDC from the coalition opposition, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), according to the DAILY POST.
