During a confrontation over an alleged Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lane violation, police officers stationed at the Odo Iya Alaro Link Bridge in the Maryland region of Lagos State allegedly shoved a motorist off the bridge.
On Friday, Objectv Media posted a video to Facebook in which the accusation was made. The officers pulled over the driver for allegedly using the BRT lane, which led to the confrontation, as stated in the report.
The scene apparently became violent as the driver became irate with the purported infraction and its punishment, leading to the driver’s alleged expulsion from the bridge.
On one picture, multiple police officers clash with around ten youths on the bridge; in another, the supposed victim is on the ground, encircled by what appears to be a mob of sympathisers.
The person filming the incident claimed, in Pidgin English, that the police officers frequently demand huge sums of money from drivers for BRT lane breaches and harass them for no reason at all.
Someone was pushed from the top of the bridge by all those BRT users in Maryland who stay in the BRT lane. This is a common practice where drivers are frequently held and fined N50,000 or N80,000.
