According to Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State and a presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), the federal government was trying to derail his candidature in 2027.
While at Madonna University Okija, Anambra State, on Friday as a guest speaker at a leadership program organised by the NextGen Mentorship and Leadership Initiative, Obi also issued a challenge to all of Nigeria’s presidential hopefuls, including Bola Tinubu, claiming he possesses the greatest qualifications for the office.
Additionally, Obi addressed the Supreme Court’s decision to vacate its previous order compelling INEC to register the NDC as a political party in its Lokoja, Kogi State, judgement.
“You will be surprised if you know what they are doing to ensure that I’m not on the ballot in 2027,” Obi told the assembly of students. The Nigerian government is making every effort to dissuade me from running in this election, but I am focused on the prize, not the roadblocks.
What motivates me to keep going is the promise of a rewarding endpoint.
My desire to see Nigeria function is stronger than my desire to become president of the country. Get your PVC, please. Your future is at risk if you choose not to cast a ballot. Vote for someone else when you get your PVC; I happen to be an Igbo man. I am not running for office solely on the basis of my Igbo heritage; rather, I am requesting your vote because I am the best candidate.
I dare anyone running for office, even President Bola Tinubu, to explain their plans for the country in a debate. I’m not trying to make you happy; I just want to see Nigeria transformed and succeed.
My dream is a Nigeria where an orphan can rise to greatness despite never having met a famous person; this has nothing to do with the Igbo people. We are seeking a nation that can function.
The northern states will reap the most benefits from my administration.
To put a stop to the criminality in Nigeria and make the country better, I would fight. Because I want to create a functional nation, I am determined to end the widespread insecurity that affects our entire nation.
The issue, according to Obi, was a lack of leadership commitment in Nigeria, and he blamed a group of people he called reactionaries for keeping the country down.
Obi stated, “They can not stop me” in reference to the deregistration of the NDC. Without success, they will be unsuccessful. This is not the final chapter, I can promise you that. Those who seek to undermine our democracy are attempting to cause harm to society, and we will not budge from our commitment to it.
It would work, I promise you, even though the Nigerian reactionaries and those hell-bent on bringing the country to its knees do not want it to. The will of the people must triumph, so I am confident that I will succeed.
Nobody is secure in Nigeria right now, and the individuals who ought to be helping to save the country are hell-bent on undermining our democracy. My message to everyone who cares about Nigeria, not just my followers, is that we must reject this tragedy while staying nonviolent.
