The PDP has said that the deregistration of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is a blow to democracy in Nigeria. This decision was made by the Federal High Court.
The party decried the consequences of the court order and stated that it was awaiting the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the judgement in a statement released on Thursday by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong.
“As we eagerly await the Certified True Copy of the judgement, we would want to use this opportunity to denounce the court ruling and its ramifications, which further limit our country’s democratic space. Particularly worrisome is the fact that this has occurred after Nigerians had already spent monies to run for different elected posts on the NDC platform.
According to the PDP, this ruling is a financial crime against the Nigerians who put money into the party and it also stifles multiparty democracy in the country.
After many Nigerians spent money to run for government on the NDC platform, the PDP claims that the verdict further limits Nigeria’s democratic space.
Supporters and members of the party who have invested in the NDC will suffer financial losses as a result of the order, according to the party’s arguments, which undermine multiparty democracy.
In addition, the PDP said that this move is in line with the federal government’s (headed by the APC) attempts to undermine the opposition in the run-up to the 2027 general election.
It asserted that President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign would be obstructed if a powerful opposition were to form and remain in power.
New developments, according to the opposition party, show a lack of respect for democratic values, which the federal government is using to undermine honest political competition.
In what it called a “struggle to protect and strengthen democracy,” the PDP called on the NDC leadership to appeal the court order legally and rally Nigerians behind the cause.
Furthermore, it urged the federal government to alleviate political tensions for the sake of national stability, democratic consolidation, and peace.
