The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, of seeking to disrupt a scheduled ceremony in Abuja, where former President Goodluck Jonathan is anticipated to be confirmed as the party’s presidential candidate.
In a statement issued on Friday, the party stated that the management of A Class Event Centre had warned it that pressure was being applied to the venue to prevent the gathering from occurring.
The PDP stated that it had already paid for the venue and met all of the programme’s requirements.
The party further stated that security agencies had been alerted of the convention, which is slated for Saturday, May 30, 2026, at Wuse 2, Abuja.
According to a statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the PDP has directed its attorneys to remind the event centre of the existing arrangement with the party.
The party insisted that the convention go forward despite what it claimed as intimidation.
“We are certain that Nigeria is a country governed by law, and any attempt to use force to suppress political dissent and opposition is an aberration which must be resisted by all people of good conscience,” the statement said.
The PDP also claimed that the FCT minister lacked constitutional jurisdiction to decide which political meetings can be held in Abuja and where they should take place.
It condemned any attempt to halt the gathering as undemocratic and urged its leaders and members around the country to attend as scheduled.
the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has advised owners of Abuja hotels, event centers, and public facilities to only interact with political party leaders recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The administration also warned that properties utilised by so-called illegitimate entities could lose their land titles.
Lere Olayinka, Wike’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, issued a statement containing the directive.
According to the statement, the policy aims to strengthen security in Abuja and prohibit public facilities from being utilised for activities that could jeopardise public safety.
