The Nigerian Army is set to revamp its training programs and refresh the curricula in its educational institutions, with the goal of creating a more agile and professional force that can tackle evolving security challenges.
This announcement was made by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, during the closing session of the Army’s annual conference held in Lagos.
Shaibu stated that the reforms will begin next year and will be shaped by the Army’s changing operational landscape.
Focusing on key areas, the Army chief mentioned that Special Forces and Army Aviation will be prioritized, with initiatives aimed at boosting the capabilities of the Special Forces School.
Intelligence briefings shared at the conference revealed a more intricate security environment, highlighting the necessity for enhanced skills in intelligence gathering, surveillance, reconnaissance, target acquisition, and cyber operations.
Shaibu stressed that the overhaul will be centrally managed by Army Headquarters through the Department of Training, emphasizing realistic, mission-focused exercises to better equip troops for operational requirements.
The Army leadership reiterated its commitment to the welfare of its personnel. Plans are in place to tackle accommodation shortages in barracks across the country, speed up ongoing housing projects, start new constructions in various divisions, and renovate aging facilities.
The Chief of Army Staff also reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to providing post-service housing for retired personnel.
