Electric vehicles will now be a part of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PiCNG), according to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval.
After receiving the green light, the program will change its name to the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles, or PiCNG & EV.
He announced that this program would head up the country’s clean mobility policy, which would cover all forms of transportation in Nigeria, including gas-powered and electric vehicles (EVs).
As part of the widened mandate, PiCNG & EV will keep deploying CNG infrastructure like IRUs, Mother and Daughter Stations, CNG vehicles, conversion programs, and associated gear.
Concurrently, he said, the program would be the national leader in developing and deploying electric vehicles, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and related investments.
A coordinated structure for the quick deployment of vehicle conversion kits across Nigeria, keeping them affordable and accessible to ordinary residents, was also directed by the President to be established by Ismaeel Ahmed, the Executive Chairman of PiCNG & EV.
Developing creative and cost-effective financing arrangements that make conversions readily available to the public would be a shared goal of the program, CreditCorp Nigeria, financial institutions, and other partners, he added.
Additionally, Tinubu expedited the deployment of Mobile Refuelling Units (MRUs) to increase access to compressed natural gas (CNG) as soon as possible.
