As a form of self-defence, several residents of Owerri West LGA have formed vigilante groups to combat the localised insecurity in the wake of the recent Benue event and claimed attacks on Imo State communities by Fulani herdsmen.
Orogwe, a community in Umunoha, Owerri West LGA, has launched a 12-man vigilante security team, becoming one of several communities in the area to do so.
“Following what is happening, it has become imperative to set up a security outfit to contain the security challenges facing the community,” said Pastor Jerry Atuzie, who was speaking during the inauguration of the security outfit and the immediate past President-General of Orogwe Community Development Union. He reminded the security detail to keep quiet and applauded their success in passing the screening.
In attendance at the ceremony were several well-known members of the community. The Ubah Welfare Union Chairman, Felix Oguzie, was one of them. He warned the vigilantes against abusing their position for their own benefit.
