Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), reaffirmed his support for President Bola Tinubu, stating that he and his allies openly backed him when it was risky and will continue to do so now that the circumstances are more favorable.
Wike reflected on the 2023 presidential election, noting that supporting Tinubu in Rivers State was neither popular nor safe for many politicians.
Nevertheless, he emphasized that his group took a definitive stance and remained resolute.
“We backed him when it was challenging, and we will continue to support him now that it is easier,” Wike remarked.
The Minister made these comments on Saturday in Ochigba, Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State, during a gathering with PDP stakeholders.
He participated in a year-end thanksgiving service hosted by former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Chibudom Nwuche, in his hometown.
Wike encouraged his supporters not to be disheartened by intimidation or pressure, assuring them that their efforts would not go in vain.
He pointed out that those who supported Tinubu prior to the election are well recognized, unlike those who only became vocal after his victory.
“Back in 2023, no one could predict the election outcome. Many were hesitant to openly support Tinubu,” he stated. “But we agreed that in politics, one must take a stand, regardless of public opinion.”
Wike noted that their choice proved beneficial, asserting that their backing bolstered Tinubu’s performance in Rivers State.
“Those who are now proclaiming ‘on your mandate we shall stand’ were silent when it truly mattered,” he remarked. “If we hadn’t spoken up then, would they be making noise now?”
The minister emphasized his strong belief in honoring agreements.
“An agreement is an agreement,” Wike stated.
“If you know you can’t fulfill a promise, don’t make it. When we reach an agreement, we must see it through.”
He also mentioned that starting next year, political activities would fully resume, and his position would be clear.
