Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, revealed that these groups in Nigeria employ sophisticated methods to protect their communications.
Tijani mentioned that they utilize call-hopping technology to make their calls untraceable. During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, the Minister explained that they route their calls through multiple cell towers to escape tracking.
He elaborated that they prefer to remain in areas lacking telecommunication coverage to avoid detection.
“They are using a unique type of technology for their calls. They do not rely on standard towers.
“They bounce their calls off various towers. This is why they prefer to be in regions that are completely disconnected,” he stated.
The Minister pointed out that this technology allows their signals to vanish as soon as the criminals change locations, enabling them to launch attacks from areas with poor or no connectivity.
He also mentioned that Nigeria’s communication satellites are being enhanced to act as a backup when ground-based towers fail.
“If our towers are down, our satellites will still function. Nigeria is the only nation in West Africa with communication satellites, and we are introducing new ones to improve their capabilities,” he concluded.
