A prominent figure in sports, Arabinrin Aderonke Atoyebi, has urged for the appointment of technocrats to lead Nigeria’s sports sector.
She emphasized that professional expertise is crucial, rather than political appointments, if the nation aims to rejuvenate its faltering sports landscape. Atoyebi made these remarks during the inaugural Big Sports Dialogue 0.1 held at Villa Doom in Ikoyi, Lagos.

As a panelist, Atoyebi pointed out that the absence of technocratic leadership and inadequate infrastructure are the sector’s most significant issues.
She remarked that substantial reform would only occur if these problems were urgently addressed. She reiterated the importance of appointing professionals who comprehend the sector’s needs.
According to her, technocrats would be capable of crafting realistic plans, executing them effectively, and ensuring accountability, which she highlighted as vital for advancement.
Atoyebi also urged for immediate action on infrastructure, asserting that no significant change can happen without well-maintained facilities.
She noted that other nations have progressed by investing in modern infrastructure that fosters athlete development.
The media executive expressed her disappointment regarding the ongoing neglect of women’s sports in Nigeria, despite female athletes achieving more international success than their male counterparts.
She called for a change in mindset, stating that the accomplishments of Nigerian women should lead to enhanced institutional support and increased visibility.
