The Kaduna State Chapter of the Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism Network (PAVE Network) has warned Nigerians against depending too much on military solutions to tackle insecurity in the nation.
PAVE asserts that lasting peace can only be attained through community-driven, evidence-based interventions among Nigerians.
Eric John, the spokesman and Coordinator, shared insights with reporters regarding the group’s activities in Kaduna, assessing the state of violent extremism in Kaduna and the broader North-West, while highlighting ongoing non-violent efforts to confront the issue.
He noted that the security landscape in Kaduna is intricate due to its strategic position, persistent communal conflicts, farmer-herder disputes, and the spillover of armed banditry from adjacent states.
He stated, “Extremist and criminal organizations continue to take advantage of forested regions, porous borders, and socio-economic weaknesses, especially youth unemployment.”
He clarified that violent extremism cannot be eradicated through force alone; kinetic methods, if not paired with prevention, dialogue, and development-oriented strategies, risk only addressing symptoms rather than the underlying issues.
The spokesman emphasized their commitment to long-term solutions; early warning, early response, community trust, and inclusive development, mentioning that the PAVE Network has focused on capacity building and dialogue throughout Kaduna and the North-West.
He highlighted that PAVE has achieved this by uniting government bodies, security forces, traditional leaders, and women and youth groups to collaboratively develop practical State and Local Action Plans on PCVE, emphasizing that these interactions have empowered communities to express their vulnerabilities and prevention priorities.
