Legal proceedings against Abubakar Malami, a former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice and a candidate for governor of Kebbi State in the upcoming 2027 general election, are purportedly politically driven, according to the state’s ADC chapter.
Engr. Sufiyanu Bala, the party’s state chairman, and Alhaji Shehu Aliyu Sambawa, the head of the ADC Elders Forum, signed a statement in which the accusation was made.
Although the ADC does not oppose legitimate investigations or prosecutions of any individual, it is of the opinion that Malami’s case is more indicative of political persecution than an honest attempt to combat corruption.
The party claimed that political motives, rather than a desire for justice, motivated the petition, investigation, arrest, custody, and prosecution of the former minister.
Additionally, it raised doubts about Malami’s arrest and incarceration for a supposedly bailable violation, claiming that his residences were searched while he was away and that an effort was made to inflate the worth of his family’s assets to discredit him.
The ADC went on to say that the charges against the ex-minister failed to take into account his history, family fortune, or accomplishments prior to being appointed Attorney-General of the Federation.
The party expressed faith in the legal system and stated its belief that the appellate courts will guarantee justice in the case.
The ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, was accused by the ADC of intimidating opposition individuals in the run-up to the 2027 general election by utilising anti-graft agencies and portions of the judiciary.
It insisted that no amount of political pressure would diminish the party’s determination ahead of the governorship race, and that its members stayed united behind Malami despite what it characterised as media attacks, extortion, and harassment.
