The Edo State Government has ordered that all political appointees, public servants, and government functionaries who intend to run for elective political seats in the upcoming general election quit immediately.
Barrister Umar Musa Ikhilor, Secretary to the State Government, made this statement available to journalists in Benin City.
The letter was dated February 28, 2026.
Ikhilor requested that the appointments and others submit letters of resignation on or before March 1, 2026, before participating in any party primary or electoral process.
He stated that the directive was made in exact accordance with the requirements of the Electoral Act (Amendment) 2026.
He stated that the regulation is intended to ensure that no aspiring candidates be disqualified by the relevant election authorities.
The Secretary to the Edo State Government emphasised that the provision is meant to ensure justice, openness, and a level playing field for all candidates, while also protecting the integrity and neutrality of public institutions.
According to him, public officials are reminded that partisan political engagements must not jeopardise their governance obligations.
“All affected officers are advised to take prompt and required steps to comply with this instruction within the specified time frame.
“The administration led by Senator Monday Okpebholo remains steadfast in its commitment to maintaining constitutionalism, respecting the rule of law, and ensuring that due process is properly followed in all aspects of governance and political engagement.
“By this announcement, all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies are directed to give this notice the widest possible circulation,” a spokesperson stated.
