Suspected bandits have slain seven persons including a vigilante in Ilesha Baruba and Kemanji towns of Baruten and Kaiama Local Government Areas of Kwara North Senatorial District.
In a statement released in Ilorin on Tuesday, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the spokesperson of the state police command, acknowledged that the incident took place on Sunday during a violent attack on the villages.
A forest patroller from the state’s Kemanji, Kaiama Local Government Area, was among those murdered, according to the spokeswoman.
As a result of increased tactical measures in all impacted districts, the police reportedly detained an informant associated with the bandit network.
Two terrible incidents happened on Sunday, April 21, 2025, in the state’s Baruten and Kaiama Local Government Areas, and the state police leadership is looking into them.
According to Ejire-Adeyemi, about 1300 hours local time, a group of 10 masked individuals invaded the Ilesha Baruba Motor Park and began firing randomly at people who had gathered at a nearby rest area.
Consequently, six people—including Alhaji Ja’awire, AbdulJabar, Mohammed Nasamu, and three others—died and two others were severely injured by gunshots.
While the wounded are being treated, the bodies have been sent to the Ilesha Baruba Morgue for autopsies. Full security measures have been put in place and an investigation has been launched to guarantee that those responsible are brought to justice.
On a related note, earlier that same day around 11:30 a vigilante group from Kemanji was conducting routine foot patrols when they came across what they believed to be bandits in the vicinity of Kainji National Park.
“Three of the alleged bandits were fatally shot during the gun duel, and vigilante Yusuf Samba ‘M’ was wounded and eventually died from his injuries.
Our inquiry led to the capture of a confidential informant, who confessed to working with a gang of robbers. According to the statement, this person has been essential in helping the investigation forward.
Full security architecture, including tactical teams, heightened monitoring, and intelligence-led operations to restore peace and order, has been activated, the state police command assured inhabitants of both areas.
Anyone caught helping criminals in any area of the state would be subject to the harshest penalties, and the document pleaded with the public to work with law enforcement.
