The daughter of former president Olusegun Obasanjo, Iyabo Obasanjo, has advocated for the selection of All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates for the 2027 general election through agreement.
During an appearance on Thursday’s Sunrise Daily on Channels Television, the APC candidate for governor of Ogun State stated that the consensus method will yield candidates who are both respectable and electable.
She brushed off worries that the process would force difficult decisions by saying that reaching a consensus did not ignore voters’ preferences.
Since reaching a consensus does not imply that party leaders disregard popular desire but rather that they thoughtfully evaluate public opinion, I firmly believe that it can yield the most suitable choices.
She explained that since no political party wants to come out on the losing end of an election, all of them will avoid choosing candidates who could hurt their prospects.
In her opinion, those that had strong electoral backing and widespread popular support would inevitably benefit from the process.
Since the party’s primary goal is to achieve victory, consensus will ultimately favour those who are more capable of achieving it on the ground.
Instead than settling for the least popular choice in a manner that discourages strong contenders or causes disagreement among aspirants, they will not do it. For that reason, she firmly believes that reaching a consensus is the optimal course of action.
Given her widespread support and stellar track record in public service as a senator and commissioner, Obasanjo is certain that the arrangement will help her secure the Ogun APC governorship ticket.
