Allegations that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu deserted him while he was in office under previous President Muhammadu Buhari have been denied by Bukola Saraki, the former president of the Senate.
While appearing on Politics Today, a Channels Television program watches, Saraki provided the clarification.
It would be wrong to hold the present president responsible, Saraki said in response to enquiries about Tinubu’s involvement in the political and legal difficulties he had as Senate President.
He claims that Tinubu was not involved in choices concerning the trials he was facing at the time and did not have the level of power that many people imagined he had within Buhari’s administration.
I don’t think that’s fair to President Tinubu. Saraki stated that Tinubu did not have the authority that was asserted of him under the administration of previous President Buhari.
He clarified that Tinubu had no say in the outcomes of the investigations into the Offa robbery or the choices that led to his prosecution by the Code of Conduct Tribunal.
Additionally, Saraki stated that despite facing political persecution for his conduct, he prioritised the country’s best interests while serving as Senate President.
“I was persecuted for doing what I felt was in the interest of the country as the President of the Senate,” he stated, explaining his actions.
He went on to say that Tinubu had nothing to do with the events leading up to his trial by the Code of Conduct Bureau or any of the other charges levelled against him at the time.
